An emergency water reserve is a planning tool for disrupted supplies, not a personalised drinking prescription. Heat may increase needs, and some people have clinical fluid advice that must guide them.

Start with the household baseline

For a three-day reserve, use three litres of drinking water per person per day as a starting planning figure. Add water for cooking, washing, pets and individual medical or care needs. The drinking reserve alone does not cover every use. Build it gradually in manageable containers rather than creating heavy unsafe stacks.

  • Store water according to the packaging instructions.
  • Keep it away from chemicals and heat sources.

Plan how people will access it

Choose sizes that household members can lift and open. If someone relies on delivery or assistance, ask the provider about disruption support and a realistic fallback. Keep some suitable water with essential travel items when needed. Do not wait until a restriction or outage to discover that all supplies are inaccessible.

  • Check dates and rotate through normal use.
  • Keep containers clean and correctly labelled.

Follow individual and local instructions

Ask a clinician about fluid concerns where a person has a restriction or other medical need. During a water incident, follow the exact water-company notice; boiling or ordinary filters do not resolve every problem. Seek help early if you cannot obtain suitable water for essential care, and do not use floodwater or an unknown source.

  • Never ration infant feeds by altering preparation.
  • Report supply issues through official channels.
