Practical, proportionate preparedness

We write for ordinary UK and European households. We prioritise affordable actions, reuse and local information. We avoid conspiracy theories, sensational predictions and claims that expensive equipment is necessary for everyone.

Sources and their limits

Our starting points are public bodies, weather services, civil protection authorities, utilities and specialist public safety organisations. Each guide links its sources. Our household planning suggestions are an interpretation of that guidance, not an endorsement by those organisations.

We distinguish drinking water from total water needs, a starter kit from a guarantee of self-sufficiency, and seasonal probabilities from specific forecasts. Current local instructions take priority over evergreen articles.

Consistency across the library

Our shared baseline is a manageable three-day plan, 3 litres of drinking water per person per day plus additional water for other uses, familiar no-cook food, battery lighting, communication and appropriate support arrangements. Longer national recommendations can still be relevant. We explain their scope rather than presenting them as contradictions.

We do not recommend indoor use of generators, barbecues, camping stoves or outdoor-only heaters. We do not publish improvised electrical work, chemical treatment doses, medicine dose changes or floodwater crossing methods.

AI assistance and honest authorship

The launch articles were generated with AI assistance, checked against a shared editorial contract and subjected to automated technical and content checks. They have not received independent specialist review. Henry Wittcombe is a pen name and the author portrait is AI-generated. We do not invent credentials or personal experience.

Recommendations

We recommend selection criteria, priorities and tradeoffs. We do not imply we have tested products we have not tested. Some recommendations include paid Amazon affiliate links. Pages with affiliate links include a clear disclosure; commissions do not change the criteria we explain. We do not publish sponsored articles at launch. Any future commercial relationship should be disclosed beside the relevant recommendation.

Dates and weather

Publication dates reflect actual publication. The launch library is dated 24 October 2026. A weather briefing describes a stated point in time and is not a live alert. Check official warning pages for current information. We do not infer individual storms from El Nino.

Corrections and reader discussion

Send corrections with the article URL, the concern and a relevant primary source. The site operator reviews stored feedback manually; there is no guaranteed response time. Material corrections should be noted in the affected article and the modification date updated.

Comments are unverified reader contributions. They are not part of our editorial advice. We may remove spam, harassment, dangerous instructions, personal information and conspiracy claims. We do not seed fake comments or backdate contributions.
