Baby feeding depends on more than having a tin in the cupboard. Water, clean equipment, safe storage and the baby's established feeding needs all matter. Preparation should preserve safe feeding routines rather than introduce improvised substitutes during an outage.

Plan around the baby you have

Discuss foreseeable disruption with your midwife or health visitor, especially if your baby uses a specialist feed. Record the normal product and preparation instructions so another trusted carer can help. Avoid buying unfamiliar alternatives purely because they are marketed for emergencies; a feeding plan needs to suit your baby's existing needs. Check expiry dates during ordinary shopping and avoid buying more than you can rotate through normal use.

  • Check that another carer knows the plan.

Understand ready-to-feed limitations

Ready-to-feed infant formula can reduce dependence on boiling water, but opened containers and feeding equipment still need safe handling. NHS guidance says equipment must still be sterilised. Choose sensible pack sizes and follow the label and NHS storage advice; a large opened bottle may be inconvenient when refrigeration is unavailable.

  • Keep the manufacturer's instructions with the supply.

Know when to ask for help

Do not dilute feeds, invent a homemade formula or guess how to make unsafe water suitable. If you cannot prepare the baby's feed safely, contact the appropriate healthcare service promptly. Include nappies, disposal bags and handwashing arrangements in the same plan, because hygiene and feeding cannot be separated in practice.

  • Check supplies as the baby's needs change.
