A phone address book is convenient until its battery is flat or the handset is missing. A small paper contact card gives each household member a usable starting point without exposing every private detail of your family's life.

Choose information someone can act on

Write the names and numbers of two trusted adults, an agreed contact outside your immediate area, and the household's meeting arrangements. Use relationships as well as names so a helper can understand the list. Include a carer or school contact where relevant, but avoid printing passwords, banking information or unnecessary identity numbers. Check that the print is still legible after the card has spent time in a pocket.

  • Ask each contact before listing them.

Make the card readable in a hurry

Use large, clear text rather than shrinking an entire family plan onto one page. A folded piece of paper in a reused pouch is enough. Put a copy with the day bag and another somewhere familiar at home. Young children need adult-led instructions appropriate to their age, rather than responsibility for coordinating the household.

  • Write international dialling codes for overseas contacts.

Check the plan with the people named

Read through a simple example together: one person is delayed, mobile data is unavailable and the usual route home is closed. Establish who will make contact and what information to pass on. Nobody should travel into a warning area simply to reach the meeting point; official instructions take priority over your plan.

  • Replace the card when numbers or arrangements change.
