Home working can remove a risky commute, but it still relies on electricity, connectivity and a safe building. Make a practical work plan before the forecast affects your employer or household.

Agree expectations early

Tell your manager about likely local disruption and ask how you should report a power or broadband failure. Save the agreed contact number somewhere accessible without your work laptop. Clarify any essential responsibilities that need handing over. Do not promise uninterrupted service simply because you are already at home.

  • Download only files your policies permit.
  • Check the process for a missed meeting.

Protect the home routine

Plan where you can work without blocking emergency supplies or routes through the house. Have suitable food, water and lighting available if the working day changes. If children are unexpectedly home, agree care arrangements rather than assuming one adult can simultaneously provide full childcare and normal work.

  • Charge devices using their approved chargers.
  • Keep confidential material secure during disruption.

Know when work stops

Follow building and emergency instructions if damage, flooding or loss of essential care makes the home unsafe. Do not improvise power connections or bring outdoor combustion equipment indoors to keep working. If you need another location, travel only when conditions and official advice allow, and check that the destination is open.

  • Inform the agreed contact when safe.
  • Prioritise people over equipment or deadlines.
