An urgent-looking post may be accurate, outdated, mislabelled or simply wrong. You do not need to investigate the whole internet. A short check of the source, place and time often tells you whether a claim is useful for your household.

Find the original message

Look for the relevant authority's own website or verified communication channel rather than a screenshot of a screenshot. Check whether the message actually contains the claim being repeated. A recognisable logo can be copied, and a confident comment does not establish that a road, water supply or evacuation centre has been officially confirmed.

  • Avoid clicking unfamiliar links in unsolicited messages.

Check place, time and scope

A warning for one county may not apply to another, and a past incident can circulate as if it is happening now. Read issue and validity times, affected areas and the requested action. Forecast uncertainty is not proof that a warning is worthless; it is part of understanding what the source says may happen.

  • Use the current version when an official warning is updated.

Share the action, not the drama

If information is useful, share the original link with a short explanation of who it concerns. State clearly if a detail remains unconfirmed, and avoid repeating speculative claims merely to criticise them. When you discover an error you previously shared, correct it promptly in the same place so others can update their plans.

  • Follow direct emergency instructions while checking wider commentary.
