UK Emergency Alerts are one way of receiving important instructions, not a complete household warning system. A phone may be switched off, incompatible or out of coverage. Prepare a second information route before assuming that silence means everything nearby is safe.

Check the official compatibility guidance

Use GOV.UK to check how the service works and your device manufacturer's instructions for settings. Alerts use compatible mobile networks rather than requiring mobile data or Wi-Fi, but a Wi-Fi-only device is not a substitute. Keep software current where supported and make sure the device is usable by the person relying on it. A working phone charger does not establish that the local mobile network will remain available throughout an incident.

  • Check settings before a warning, not while driving.

Add a different information route

Identify a battery-powered radio and the official local authority or emergency service channels relevant to you. Agree with a trusted person how important instructions will be passed on if one household cannot receive alerts. A second phone on the same power supply may fail for the same reason as the first.

  • Write down where official updates can be found.

Respond to the message you actually receive

Read the location, timing and requested action carefully. Do not substitute a remembered headline for current instructions. If driving, stop somewhere safe and legal before reading a handset. Follow the official message and check its original source where practical, while avoiding delays to urgent protective action.

  • Review the plan after replacing a phone or network.
