A winter car kit is useful only after the more important decision about whether a journey should happen. Use official travel advice, current conditions and the needs of the people travelling.

Check before committing

Read the weather warning and official road information for the entire route, including the return. Look for closures and operator instructions affecting connecting travel. Tell work or an appointment provider early if you cannot safely attend. Do not assume a main road being open makes every side road or destination accessible.

  • Check the timing of forecast deterioration.
  • Keep an alternative appointment or work arrangement.

Prepare within your competence

Maintain the vehicle through its normal servicing and safety checks, following manufacturer guidance and local legal requirements. Carry suitable warm clothing, a charged phone and basic personal essentials. Keep necessary medicines with the person, not in a forgotten overnight bag. Avoid giving yourself a false deadline that encourages rushing.

  • Make sure fuel or charge planning is realistic.
  • Tell a trusted contact the intended journey.

Respect changing conditions

Follow police and road-authority advice and never bypass closures. If you encounter floodwater, do not drive through it. A route-planning app may not know every local hazard. If conditions are beyond your ability or the journey cannot be completed safely, stop the plan rather than treating equipment as permission to continue.

  • Use official updates during a safe stop.
  • Have a clear way to report a delay.
