Flood-warning services are organised differently across the UK. Register with the service relevant to each location you need to monitor, and understand its coverage rather than assuming one subscription follows you everywhere.

Start with the official national service

For England, use the Environment Agency route through GOV.UK; Scotland uses SEPA and Wales uses Natural Resources Wales. Northern Ireland provides its own flood information through nidirect and the responsible agencies. Check the official page for your address and follow the available registration process and current instructions.

  • Save the service's direct web address.
  • Do not rely only on a forwarded registration link.

Check what the address receives

Some places receive broad alerts while detailed warnings cover particular rivers or coastal areas. Surface-water or small-stream flooding may not produce a property-level message. Read the coverage explanation and combine warning messages with weather forecasts and local authority information. Ask the service if the registration result is unclear.

  • Include work or a relative's location where useful.
  • Keep contact details current after a phone change.

Turn messages into a plan

Tell household members how a warning will reach them and which action follows. If a relative needs help understanding a message, agree who checks it with them. A registration is preparation, not protection by itself. Follow emergency instructions and never wait for a text before responding to immediate danger.

  • Review the service after moving.
  • Keep a paper copy of important contacts.
