A useful drain report gives the responsible organisation a clear location and observable problem. It does not require lifting a cover, entering water or attempting maintenance on public drainage yourself.

Record what you can see

From a safe dry position, note the street, nearest property number and a recognisable landmark. A photograph may help if it can be taken without standing in traffic. Describe ponding, visible loose debris or recurring overflow rather than diagnosing an underground fault. Keep the report reference for later follow-up.

  • Include the date and approximate time.
  • Avoid photographing people unnecessarily.

Find the correct reporting route

Responsibility can depend on whether the problem concerns a public road drain, private drain, sewer or watercourse. Use your council or water company's official guidance to route the report. If unsure, describe the location and ask. Do not assume a social-media post has reached the organisation that can act.

  • Save local reporting pages before bad weather.
  • Tell a landlord about relevant private drainage.

Keep immediate safety separate

If flooding develops, stay out of the water and follow closures and official instructions. Do not remove a manhole cover or try to clear a drain during a flood. Tell emergency services about immediate danger. A previous report does not mean the area is safe or that you should wait for a repair before leaving.

  • Keep children away from pooled water.
  • Update the report if circumstances materially change.
