Insurance details and identification are much easier to gather before a leak, power cut or evacuation. Create a small document set that remains useful when your usual device is unavailable.

Select the useful information

Include policy numbers, emergency contacts, essential medical information you choose to carry, and relevant identification copies. Record how to reach your landlord or managing agent. You do not need every old statement. Keep originals secure and limit what you carry to information that helps with a realistic disruption.

  • Check that contact numbers are current.
  • Add a paper list of necessary regular medicines.

Use more than one format

A waterproof wallet can protect paper from an ordinary spill, although it is no guarantee against flooding. Keep a secure digital copy using your normal protected storage and ensure you know how to access it. Avoid placing unprotected identity documents into a shared community folder or public chat.

  • Name files so another household member can find them.
  • Keep sensitive access details private.

Make the set reachable

Store the document wallet somewhere easy to access without climbing or moving furniture. Tell trusted household members where it is. If official instructions require immediate evacuation, leave without documents rather than entering a hazardous area to retrieve them. Review the set when policies, contacts or care arrangements change.

  • Put the review date on the folder.
  • Keep a separate copy with a trusted contact if appropriate.
