A headtorch can be useful when you need both hands to read instructions, find a cable or handle a light bag during an outage. The Petzl Tikkina and Black Diamond Astro 300 both offer a 300-lumen maximum, but their controls and battery systems make a more useful comparison. The recommendations here are based on manufacturer specifications checked on 24 October 2026, not measured household performance.

Compare the controls you will actually use

Petzl lists three white-light levels, a single button, a tilting lamp and a wide beam for the Tikkina. That is a sensible starting point for someone who wants a few defined choices for nearby tasks. Try how easily the intended user can find the button and adjust the strap. A simple description on a product page does not prove that a switch suits limited dexterity.

The Astro 300 offers dimming, a strobe setting and brightness memory. Memory can help someone who wants to return to a chosen brightness rather than begin at maximum output each time. Dimming gives more adjustment but also another operation to learn. Prefer the arrangement that the household can use calmly without repeated cycling through unwanted settings.

  • Check fit with glasses or hearing devices where relevant.

Choose a battery system deliberately

The Tikkina is supplied with three AAA/LR03 batteries and accepts the separately available Petzl CORE rechargeable battery. Black Diamond lists three AAA batteries or its separately sold BD 1500 rechargeable battery for the Astro 300. These optional packs are different systems. Do not buy a charger or battery on the assumption that fitting one brand makes it compatible with the other.

For occasional use, permitted replaceable cells may be easier to organise than another rechargeable pack. For regular walks or household tasks, a compatible rechargeable option may fit your routine better. Include the pack, charging equipment and any spare cells in the total cost. Neither lamp gains a charged reserve simply because its listing describes rechargeable compatibility.

Read brightness and weather claims in context

Petzl gives a 7-lumen low setting for the Tikkina and a much higher maximum. Those are different jobs: reading a nearby label does not require the same output as looking further ahead. Black Diamond also separates maximum output from its longest runtime. Do not combine the maximum brightness and longest advertised duration into one expected performance figure.

Both manufacturers list IPX4 weather resistance. Treat that as the specified protection, not permission to submerge the lamp or enter floodwater. A headtorch also cannot make damaged electrics, an unstable building or an exposed route safe. Tilt the beam away from other people and choose a comfortable useful setting rather than assuming more light is always better.

  • Follow the instructions for battery type, charging, storage and cleaning.

When each choice earns its place

Shortlist the Tikkina if defined levels and a broad nearby beam fit the tasks you have identified, particularly if you already use the appropriate Petzl battery system. Shortlist the Astro 300 if adjustable brightness and memory are useful to you, or the compatible Black Diamond charging arrangement already forms part of your kit. These are practical fit recommendations, not a ranking of tested beam quality.

Keep a working existing headtorch if its controls, strap, output and batteries meet the need. If you already have an accessible handheld torch and never need hands-free light, another purchase may add little. Check the exact model, bundle contents and seller before ordering: a compatible rechargeable pack is not necessarily included. After purchase, use the lamp on a normal safe task and make its storage place known.
