An unfamiliar room has unfamiliar exits, equipment and local hazards. A short check on arrival can make later instructions easier to follow without turning the holiday into an inspection exercise. Use the accommodation's actual procedures and local official advice.

Read the property's instructions

Find the stated emergency and evacuation information and ask the host or reception about anything unclear. Notice the normal route out without moving or interfering with safety equipment. If you need accessible assistance, raise it immediately rather than assuming someone will know during an incident. Keep the property address available outside your phone.

  • Know how to contact staff out of hours.

Understand the local warning route

Ask which official authority issues weather or other hazard instructions and where guests should receive updates. Check current destination guidance and relevant risks for the season. Do not assume a warning system, alarm sound or emergency phone arrangement is identical to the one at home, especially when travelling across borders.

  • Save the local emergency information in a usable format.

Keep essentials findable

Put shoes, keys, essential documents and permitted routine care items somewhere you can reach quickly. Keep exits clear of bags. If instructed to leave, follow the local directions and take only what is immediately available without delaying safety. Do not return to a damaged or evacuated property until the responsible authorities say it is safe.

  • Tell a trusted person if you move accommodation unexpectedly.
