Printed insurance contacts and a readable itinerary can help when a phone is unavailable. A protective pouch keeps that small document set together, but its closure and stated protection matter more than an outdoor label. Here the comparison is the ORTLIEB Document-Bag A4 and Sea to Summit TPU Guide Map Case L, using manufacturer information checked on 24 October 2026.

Decide what needs protecting

Lay out the papers first: an essential contact sheet, relevant booking details and any documents required for the journey. Decide which originals must travel and which secure copies are sufficient for information. FCDO advice recommends a backup way to access key travel information. A copied passport is useful information, but it does not replace a valid travel document at a border.

Check thickness as well as paper size. Several booklets, folded sheets and a passport create a different packet from one flat map. Measure the complete set and leave enough room to operate the closure correctly. An external product measurement is not a guarantee of usable internal space.

ORTLIEB Document-Bag A4

ORTLIEB offers its transparent Document-Bag in A6, A5 and A4 formats. The A4 version is the relevant starting point for ordinary printed sheets. The manufacturer specifies a roll closure, welded seams and IP64 protection, with the closure rolled three or four times and secured as instructed. IP64 addresses dust and splashing water; it is not an immersion rating.

The transparent body makes it easier to find the right sheet without emptying the packet. It also makes contents visible to other people. Keep private details inside another appropriate layer or turn the packet away from public view. Follow the storage instructions too: ORTLIEB advises against storing the bag rolled or folded because that can damage the coating.

Sea to Summit TPU Guide Map Case L

The UK manufacturer page lists the L case at 17 x 13 inches and 102 g. It describes welded TPU construction, a pressure-seal closure, corner attachment points and a detachable neck strap. The material is intended to fold for storage. These are practical differences if you want to view a larger map or repeatedly fold the empty case into a day bag.

Sea to Summit states that the case can survive submersion when properly closed, but the page does not give a depth-and-duration rating to use here. Do not infer an independently verified immersion limit. Check that the exact size and closure match the listing, and read the complete current instructions before putting valuable originals inside.

Match the pouch to ordinary use

Choose the ORTLIEB if its document format and stated splash protection meet the job and you can accommodate its storage instructions. Consider the Sea to Summit if a larger viewing area and foldable map-case layout are genuinely useful. Neither feature set removes the need for a separate secure backup of important information.

Before travel, check the closure and inspect the pouch according to the manufacturer guidance. Use an ordinary paper substitute while learning the handling, not the only copy of an essential document. Keep the packet accessible to authorised people without wearing sensitive records openly around your neck or leaving them in a public group bag.

Use a cheaper option when it is sufficient

For paperwork kept inside a bag on an ordinary journey, an existing folder inside a suitable resealable bag may be adequate for organisation and minor accidental splashes. Do not assign it a waterproof rating it does not have. Buy a specialist case only when the exposure, repeated use or viewing layout justifies it. Reduce the packet first; unnecessary sensitive records create a privacy and replacement problem whatever pouch you buy.
