A pet evacuation plan should work before rising water separates you from a carrier, lead or vehicle. Prepare the usual care items and arrange a suitable destination alongside the household plan.

Keep transport equipment ready

Put carriers, leads and other necessary equipment somewhere accessible. Practise normal carrier use in calm conditions if appropriate for the animal. Check identification information and keep a recent photograph. Speak to the vet about individual health needs or prescribed medicines rather than relying on general online advice.

  • Keep familiar food and water available.
  • Write brief care instructions for a trusted helper.

Check the destination

Ask potential hosts about animals before depending on their offer. If the local authority provides emergency accommodation, explain the species and transport needs and follow its instructions. Do not assume every venue can handle every animal. Include practical cleaning and waste supplies without making the departure load unmanageable.

  • Pack bowls and required labelled medication.
  • Plan separately for animals needing specialist transport.

Prioritise people and safe movement

Act early on official warnings while routes remain safe. Do not wade or drive through floodwater to reach an animal or enter a damaged building to retrieve supplies. If an animal is trapped, contact the appropriate emergency or animal service and describe the situation from safety rather than attempting a hazardous rescue.

  • Keep animals away from contaminated water.
  • Tell helpers when your location changes.
