Ice on a pond or river is not a safe walking surface to test. Make the rule clear before a winter outing so children, adults and dog walkers do not improvise when an object or animal goes onto the ice.

Set the rule before the walk

Keep everyone off frozen natural water, even when someone else has stepped onto it. Choose a route that avoids tempting edges where possible and supervise children appropriately. Explain that appearance and footprints do not establish safety. Keep dogs under control so an ordinary walk does not become a rescue attempt.

  • Do not throw toys towards the ice.
  • Check the route and warning before departure.

Plan a safer outing

Choose usable paths, suitable footwear and layers, with a warm place to return to. Carry a charged phone and know the location well enough to describe it. If conditions are poor, pick another activity. A short outing still needs judgment about ice, exposed weather and the ability of everyone in the group.

  • Keep necessary personal items accessible.
  • Allow time to turn back without rushing.

Call for help without entering

If a person or animal goes through ice, do not step onto it or enter the water to attempt a rescue. Call emergency services and give a clear location, following their instructions. Keep others away from the edge. Seek urgent medical help for suspected hypothermia; it is a medical emergency, not simply feeling chilly.

  • Keep the access route clear for responders.
  • Stay available to explain what happened from safety.
