General roadside advice may be difficult or impossible for a disabled passenger to follow. Planning before the journey lets you identify what assistance is needed and understand the road authority's instructions for a situation where leaving the vehicle is not safe or possible.

Read the relevant official guidance

Use the current advice for the road network and country where you will travel. National Highways gives specific instructions for people who cannot follow ordinary motorway breakdown advice. Discuss these calmly with the passenger and other adults; do not invent a lifting or evacuation method based on a generic emergency kit list. Ask whether the passenger wants a short communication note available for an unfamiliar assistance worker.

  • Keep an accessible version of the instructions.

Explain needs to the recovery provider

Ask whether the provider can transport the passenger and any mobility equipment appropriately. Give accurate information about the vehicle, access requirements and equipment size, with the person's agreement. A policy covering the car does not automatically mean every replacement vehicle will meet the passenger's needs.

  • Record any agreed arrangements and the contact number.

Keep essentials within reach

Place communication aids, approved equipment supplies and suitable clothing where they can be reached without unsafe searching. Maintain existing care instructions and ask the responsible provider about any health-related travel concern. If a breakdown occurs, tell the operator immediately about the access need and follow official instructions rather than feeling obliged to copy other passengers.

  • Review after changes to equipment or mobility.
