A delayed train, flight or ferry can affect an animal waiting at home. Preparing a pet-care backup before travelling gives you more choices and avoids pressuring a friend to make a dangerous journey simply because nobody else has the right information.

Ask a realistic helper in advance

Choose someone willing and able to provide the agreed care, or make suitable professional arrangements. Explain the likely duration and limits of the task. Confirm access securely rather than placing keys or codes in a public message. If the animal needs specialist handling or care, ask the vet or appropriate provider about a suitable contingency.

  • Get consent before listing the helper in your travel plan.

Write the animal's normal routine

Provide food details, the usual equipment location and relevant veterinary contacts. Keep existing medicine instructions with the professional care plan and do not ask a helper to guess at doses. Leave adequate familiar supplies for the agreed period, within ordinary sensible use, and make it clear what to do if something is missing or concerning.

  • Keep the instructions dated and easy to find.

Communicate confirmed changes

Tell the helper promptly when your return is delayed and agree the next update. If local conditions make access unsafe, seek appropriate advice rather than demanding a visit through floodwater or storm damage. Review the arrangement when moving home, changing travel patterns or the animal's needs change, and remove access permissions that are no longer needed.

  • Thank the helper and replace supplies after use.
