A car kit can make waiting for assistance more manageable, but it does not replace a roadworthy vehicle or safe breakdown procedures. Choose items for the people who travel in the car and keep the most useful ones reachable without unpacking the boot beside traffic.

Start with ordinary passenger needs

Suitable warm clothing, a torch, drinking water and food can help during delays. Add the correct phone cable and current breakdown details. Think about children, disability and other passenger needs before buying a prepacked kit. Avoid leaving temperature-sensitive medicines or items in the car unless their specific storage instructions allow it.

  • Keep high-visibility clothing accessible if you carry it.

Store the kit safely

Secure items so they do not become loose objects during braking or a collision. Do not block visibility, controls or exits with bags and bottles. Check the vehicle manufacturer's storage guidance for batteries and chargers. Refresh food and water sensibly and change seasonal items when the conditions and your journeys change.

  • Know where the torch is before driving at night.

Know the breakdown instructions

Read the road authority's current advice for the roads you use. A motorway breakdown has different dangers from waiting in a safe car park. Do not step into traffic or attempt roadside repairs because a tool was included in a kit. Tell assistance providers about passengers who need additional help and follow their instructions.

  • Review the kit after it is used.
