A collection schedule can clash with a wind warning. Check council instructions before placing bins outside and avoid turning an ordinary waste task into a hazardous trip during the storm.

Check the local collection notice

Look at the council's official service page for delays, changed presentation times or suspension. The right arrangement depends on local streets and the collection operation. Do not assume a neighbour's earlier message is still current. If no special notice exists, consider whether you can contact the service before conditions deteriorate.

  • Save your collection-service link.
  • Keep waste contained away from escape routes.

Prepare a stable storage place

Keep lids closed and loose recycling contained using the council's accepted methods. Avoid overfilling so material spills before collection. Where you can store bins securely on your property, do so without blocking the pavement, access for neighbours or emergency exits. Do not improvise attachments that damage a public fixture.

  • Move lightweight loose packaging indoors.
  • Keep collection access clear when it is safe.

Let a runaway bin go

Do not chase a bin into traffic or stand outside wrestling it in high winds. If it creates an immediate road hazard, report that through the appropriate service from safety. Retrieve displaced items after conditions improve, watching for damaged trees, cables and other debris rather than focusing only on the bin.

  • Keep children away from moving debris.
  • Recheck council notices after the weather passes.
