A useful winter food reserve resembles your normal cupboard. Plan familiar meals that remain manageable if deliveries are delayed, while keeping a separate option for a power cut or loss of cooking facilities.

Plan from meals you already eat

List simple breakfasts, lunches and evening meals suitable for the household, including allergies, dietary needs and pets. Check cupboards before buying. Add a few shelf-stable items gradually and rotate them through ordinary use. Avoid choosing food only because it stores for years if nobody will comfortably eat it.

  • Check the manual tin opener.
  • Keep a short meal list with the supplies.

Include a no-cook option

Snow can coincide with an outage, so do not rely entirely on a freezer or electric hob. Keep familiar food that can be eaten safely without cooking and follow packaging instructions. Store drinking water with three litres per person per day as a baseline, plus additional needs for cooking, washing, medical care and pets.

  • Keep food accessible to the people using it.
  • Store cleaning chemicals separately.

Arrange help before running short

Discuss safe shopping or delivery alternatives with trusted people and the relevant services. Do not ask someone to make a hazardous journey for a non-essential item. If you cannot meet dietary or care needs, seek local support early. Never bring outdoor cooking equipment indoors because the usual kitchen is unavailable.

  • Review supplies after use.
  • Keep necessary medicines under their proper storage conditions.
