The best storage place is not necessarily the neatest cupboard. It is somewhere the household can reach safely, where the supplies remain in good condition and where finding one item does not require moving several heavy boxes. Different essentials may need different locations.

Match location to the item

Keep a torch close to where it may first be needed, such as by the bed or entrance. Store heavy water low on stable shelving. Protect food from damp, pests, excessive heat and contamination. Follow each product's storage instructions rather than assuming an emergency box overrides them.

  • Keep batteries and devices away from children where required.
  • Leave exits, stairs and communal passages unobstructed.

Make the arrangement visible

Write a short location list on the household plan. Everyone should know where keys, essential documents and charging cables are kept. If an item moves into daily use, replace it or update the list. A beautifully organised box nobody can identify is harder to use than a few clear shelves.

Account for the hazard

If flooding is possible, consider how to protect essential documents and portable supplies without lifting more than you can manage. Do not place everything in a cellar or a single spot likely to become inaccessible. Separate the light bag you can leave with from supplies for staying home. Revisit storage after room changes or a move, and check that visitors or carers who need access have the right information. Never enter an unsafe space to recover equipment.
