In a block of flats, water loss can involve the external network, shared equipment or an individual property. Different floors may experience different symptoms. A useful plan includes both the water supplier and the person responsible for the building's communal systems.

Find the right contact

Ask management how residents should report a water interruption and receive updates. Check the supplier's incident page too. If neighbours are affected differently, report that factual detail without trying to diagnose pumps or valves yourself. Do not enter plant rooms or adjust shared equipment unless you are authorised and qualified.

  • Keep the full flat address ready when reporting.
  • Note any access issue that would affect deliveries.

Store manageable supplies

Keep a drinking-water reserve within safe weight and storage limits, plus extra for other needs. Smaller containers may be easier to carry upstairs if lifts are unavailable. Do not leave supplies in communal corridors or block fire doors. Tell relevant helpers where essential personal supplies are kept.

Plan assistance early

If you cannot collect or carry water, explain the barrier to the supplier and building management before an incident where possible. Confirm rather than assume what support is available. Medical dependencies need their separate care plan. During an outage, follow the current notice for your supply and do not infer that water is safe because another flat has normal pressure. After restoration, use the supplier's instructions and report persistent problems through the proper channels.
