Living close together does not mean residents share the same needs or know the building's procedures. A block-level support plan should complement the responsible building manager's arrangements, keep common routes clear and help neighbours communicate safely.

Start with the building's actual instructions

Find the responsible manager's emergency contact and the current fire and evacuation information for the building. Ask about any access needs through the appropriate process. Residents must not invent a competing evacuation rule or assume another block's approach applies. Keep general neighbour support clearly separate from instructions controlled by the responsible building organisation. Ask how residents who cannot read the posted notices will receive the current information.

  • Report unclear or damaged notices through the proper route.

Agree a modest support network

Invite residents to share a contact method voluntarily and describe the specific help they might want or offer. Keep personal care details and access codes out of a public group. People may prefer private contact, paper notices or an accessible format, so do not assume one smartphone chat reaches everyone.

  • Choose a coordinator and backup with consent.

Keep common spaces usable

Do not store emergency supplies, donated goods or charging equipment in corridors or near exits. Confirm any venue or collection point with the responsible manager. During disruption, use dated verified messages and follow official directions. Afterward, remove stale notices and update the support list without retaining private information that no longer serves an agreed purpose.

  • Review the network when residents or management change.
