In a shared house, the first planning problem is often ownership. One person may assume a torch is communal while its owner takes it away for the weekend. A short agreement can make shared essentials useful without requiring everyone to have the same budget or lifestyle.

Agree a small common core

Choose shared items explicitly, such as a torch, radio, manual opener and contact sheet. Decide who checks them and how replacement costs are handled. Keep exits and shared areas clear. Personal medicines, dietary requirements and private documents should remain under their owners' control.

  • Mark genuinely communal equipment clearly.
  • Write down the landlord's urgent repair contact.

Avoid food and water assumptions

Discuss which supplies are available to share and which are personal. Count people normally staying, including regular guests, when considering common needs. A cupboard full of food is not a plan if half the house cannot safely eat it. Keep original packaging where labels and instructions are needed.

Update when residents change

Show a new housemate the relevant plan and remove outdated contact details. Agree how to report a water interruption or power cut so several people do not assume someone else has acted. Keep private information minimal on the shared sheet. If an incident requires leaving, follow the building's arrangements and official instructions. Nobody should stay behind to protect communal supplies or wait for an absent housemate. A useful agreement is brief enough that people actually read it and specific enough to remove the everyday misunderstandings.
