A water butt can be useful for a garden, but it should not be counted as ready drinking water in a household emergency plan. Roofs, gutters and storage can introduce contamination. The fact that water began as rain does not tell you what it contains when collected.

Keep the categories separate

List suitable drinking water separately from water intended for other permitted tasks. Use clear labels and suitable containers so nobody pours non-drinking water into a cup or food preparation jug. Keep children and visitors in mind; an unmarked bottle can be misunderstood even when the usual household knows its purpose.

  • Never reuse a chemical container for drinking water.
  • Do not assume clear water is free of hazards.

Avoid improvised treatment claims

Boiling and consumer filters do not solve every possible contamination problem. This site does not give a universal treatment recipe for rainwater, floodwater or other unknown sources. Follow water-company and public-health instructions during an interruption, including any restrictions on use of the normal supply.

Plan a reliable alternative

A modest reserve of appropriately stored drinking water provides a clearer starting point than collecting an uncertain source after the taps fail. Record where the reserve is and how you would obtain additional official supplies if needed. If your home uses a private water supply, seek the relevant local authority or professional guidance before an incident. Private systems need their own maintenance and contingency arrangements; advice for a mains-water customer may not cover them.
