Potassium iodide has a specific role in some nuclear emergencies and is not an all-purpose radiation remedy. Do not take it pre-emptively because of a headline, rumour or proximity to a national border.
Understand the limit
WHO explains that potassium iodide can protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine in particular circumstances. It does not provide general protection against radiation or every radioactive substance. Timing, the incident and the person matter. Buying a product does not establish that taking it is appropriate or that the product meets local requirements.
- Use official public-health information.
- Do not substitute dietary iodine or salt.
Follow the responsible authority
Take potassium iodide only when explicitly instructed by public-health authorities, following their instructions. National arrangements for information and distribution differ. A message aimed at another area does not automatically apply to your address. Ask a healthcare professional about individual questions rather than using a generic blog to choose a dose.
- Check the affected area and message time.
- Keep the original instruction available.
Prepare useful ordinary arrangements
Keep official alert sources, household contacts, necessary medicines and a manageable departure bag organised. During an incident, follow shelter, evacuation and food or water instructions as given. Do not travel into a restricted area to obtain tablets or delay leaving for a purchase. Avoid circulating advice that removes geographical or medical limits.
- No dose instructions are supplied here.
- Seek appropriate medical advice for exposure concerns.
