A confident tone and a government-looking graphic do not make a preparedness claim reliable. Check who issued it, when, where and what action it actually supports before passing it to others.

Trace the original source

Follow the claim back to the responsible authority or primary guidance. Check whether the page is current and whether it is a strategy, public checklist, professional document or live warning. A screenshot may omit the date, exceptions or geographic limit. Do not assume a translated repost preserves those details.

  • Use direct official links.
  • Keep the place and update time in shared messages.

Separate evidence from sales

A product recommendation should explain its purpose, limitations and suitability, not simply invoke an emergency. Ask whether testing is documented and whether a cheaper existing item solves the same problem. A national kit list is not an endorsement of every commercial bundle using similar words or official-looking colours.

  • Look for declared commercial links.
  • Check manufacturer instructions for equipment claims.

Preserve uncertainty and scope

A seasonal probability is not a forecast of a particular national disaster. A minimum preparedness target is not a deadline for guaranteed rescue. If two official pages differ, investigate their dates, location and intended use rather than combining the most alarming parts. During an actual incident, follow the responsible local authority's instructions.

  • Correct a shared error clearly.
  • Do not invent expertise to settle a disagreement.
