There is no single useful bag weight for every person. A bag that one adult carries easily may be impossible for another person, especially on stairs or with a child. Choose contents around the journey and the carrier rather than a fixed online checklist.

Separate portable and home supplies

Your home reserve may include heavy drinking water and several days of food. A grab bag needs the essentials that help you leave safely and manage the first stage of displacement. Include identification copies, important contacts, necessary personal items and suitable charging equipment. Keep critical daily-use items on a last-minute list if they cannot be duplicated.

  • Pack your usual glasses or an appropriate spare if available.
  • Keep medication arrangements consistent with your clinician's advice.

Test comfort and access

Try the bag in normal safe conditions, without creating an evacuation drill that interferes with care. Check straps, handles and whether you can open compartments. Put frequently needed items where you can reach them. Water is heavy, so plan what you can carry and where official support may be available rather than assuming an oversized bag solves everything.

Remove items without a clear purpose

Avoid filling the bag with specialist tools you cannot use. Choose weather-appropriate clothing and familiar food. Make a separate arrangement for pets and mobility equipment. Review the bag as needs change. If authorities tell you to leave immediately, do not delay to complete a perfect packing list; people and immediate safety take precedence over belongings.
