Equipment only helps if the intended person can reach and operate it. An accessibility check is not an optional extra to a kit; it determines whether the kit works. Begin with the people who would use the items, and ask what makes a task easier or harder.

Test the ordinary actions

Try opening a water bottle, operating the torch and finding a contact number. Do not infer ability from appearance or age. Tight lids, tiny switches, small text and heavy containers can create avoidable obstacles. Test in normal safe conditions without deliberately switching off essential equipment.

  • Choose labels with readable contrast and size.
  • Keep heavy supplies at a manageable height.

Provide more than one route

Combine paper information with an accessible digital copy where helpful. Consider sound, light and vibration needs when choosing alert devices, and check that everyone understands the chosen format. A power bank may need a familiar cable and a clearly marked port to be useful.

Plan support with consent

Agree who can help with a specific task, how they will know help is needed and what happens if they cannot arrive. Keep private health details only where necessary and with permission. If a device or care routine depends on utilities, ask the relevant provider or care team about contingency arrangements. A household kit cannot substitute for an individual care plan. Recheck the setup after an injury, equipment change or change in mobility, because an arrangement that once worked may become difficult without anyone noticing.
